For example, we are going to convert the mixed fraction 2 3/4 to improper. To do this we multiply the whole number (2) by the denominator (4) and get 8 as the result. Now we add 8 + 3 and we obtain that the new numerator is 11.

Therefore, the mixed fraction 2 3/4 is equal to the improper fraction 11/4.
