## How to know if two fractions are equivalent

There are several **methods to know if we are dealing with equivalent fractions**which in other words means that their value is exactly the same. Let's see how to calculate the equivalence of two fractions to know if they are equal to each other.

**Method 1 for checking whether two fractions are equivalent**

The first method we can use consists of **perform a cross multiplication of both fractions**i.e:

- Numerator of the first fraction times the denominator of the second.
- Denominator of the first fraction times the numerator of the second fraction.

If the result matches, then they are equivalent.

For example, in the case of the image we would have to multiply:

A x D

B x C

For example, are 2/3 and 4/6 equivalent fractions? Let's see:

2 x 6 = 12

3 x 4 = 12

Since the result in both multiplications coincide, then they are equivalent.

**Method 2 to know if two fractions are equivalent**

The second method to identify equivalent fractions consists of solving the division of each of the fractions (numerator by denominator). If the result coincides, then they are equivalent.

For example, are the fractions 4/5 and 16/20 the same? Let's do the division of each one:

4/5 = 0,8

16 / 20 = 0,8

As the result coincides, we are again dealing with equivalent fractions.

## How to make equivalent fractions

To make equivalent fractions we also have two valid methods:

- Multiplying numerator and denominator by the same number
- Dividing numerator and denominator by the same number

Using one option or the other will depend on the starting fraction. If it has very large numbers, we will probably be able to do divisions without a problem but if our original fraction has very small numbers and we are asked to calculate a large number of equivalent fractions, then we will use multiplication.

**Fractions equivalent to 3/5**

For example, we will calculate **5 examples of fractions equivalent to 3/5**. To do this we will multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number several times:

Per 2 → 6 / 10

For 3 → 9 / 15

For 4 → 12 / 20

For 5 → 15 / 25

For 10 → 30/50

All of these are **fractions equivalent to 3/5**.

**With what equivalent fractions can the number 0.25 be expressed?**

If we pass 0.25 of decimal to fractionwe see that **equals 1/4**. From here, we can extract multiple equivalent fractions using the method of multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number.
