Calculate area of a cylinder

Calculate the area of an online cylinder is something you can achieve thanks to our tool. Its operation is very simple and will allow you to know the area of a cylinder in a matter of seconds.

The only data that you need to know about the cylinder is the height and the radius of one of its bases. These are the only two unknowns needed to calculate the area of this figure. Remember that a cylinder has two circular bases and a height that is the distance between them.

What is the formula for the area of a cylinder?

Cylinder

If you want to calculating the area of a cylinder by handIf you want to know the formula that will allow you to find it out, then you need to know the formula that will allow you to find it out.

The area of a cylinder is the area of one of its bases multiplied by two plus the sum of the area of its side. This can be summarized as follows formula:

A = 2 π r ( r + h )

  • r = radius of the base
  • h = cylinder height
  • π = 3,1415

As you can see, the area of a cylinder is determined by its height and the radius of the base so the larger their values, the larger the area of this figure.

How to calculate the area of a cylinder: example

We will calculate the area of a cylinder 15 centimeters in height and a diameter of 5 centimeters.

As we are given the diameter and in the formula to get the area of the cylinder we are asked for the radiuswe are going to divide it by two, that is to say:

Cylinder base radius = diameter / 2 = 5 cm / 2 = 2.5 centimeters

Now that we have the radius, let's calculate the area of the cylinder by substituting all the data we have in the formula:

A = 2 π r ( r + h ) = 2 -π - 2,5 cm (2,5 cm + 15 cm) = 5-π (17,5 cm) = 87,5π cm2 = 274.89 cm2

As you have seen, obtaining the area of a cylinder is not particularly complicated if we have all the necessary data to apply the direct formula.

Cylinder base area

Cylinder surface

If what we want is calculate the area of the base of the cylinderIf we want to calculate the value, we will apply the following mathematical formula:

Area of the base of the cylinder = πr2

Note that the base of the cylinder is a circle so the formula to calculate its surface is the same as that of that geometric figure.

Remember that if we are given the diameter of the cylinder as data, the radius is obtained by dividing by two.

Cylinder side area

In the event that we are asked to calculate the lateral area of the cylinderwe will have to apply this other formula:

Lateral area of cylinder = 2 -π - r - h

The base of the rectangle that forms the lateral area of the cylinder is equal to the length of the circumference of the base while its height h is the same as that of the cylinder.

Cylinder volume

Cylinder Volume Calculator

If you want to calculate the volume of the cylinderIf the radius and the height are also involved, then we need to apply another mathematical operation in which the radius and the height are also involved, although in a different way.

To find out how to perform such calculations, you can use this calculator to find out the volume of the cylinder.

    • Hi Ruddy,

You have told us the measurements but not the unit, we do not know if they are centimeters, meters...that totally changes the amount of liters of the tank.

We also don't know if by .83 you mean 0.83.

Assuming that the dimensions of the cylindrical tank are 0.83 m and 0.59 m, we get a volume of 0.91 m.3. Here you can calculate it:

      Those 0.91 m3 equivalent to 910 liters.

  1. I must enter the calculator in meters or centimeters? it does not indicate anything there, it should be clearer and more specific, not ambiguous.

    • Hello Eder,

You can enter it in any measurement you want. It is not that we are ambiguous or unclear, it is that you must be aware that if you put the units in centimeters, the result will be in square centimeters while if you put it in meters, it will be square meters.

What there is is a lack of knowledge on your part, not a lack of clarity on ours.

  2. Hello
I don't know how I could calculate the area and volume of a cylinder that has a "broken" part. Its measurements are:
    -R: 9cm
-h: 18cm and in the broken part are 6cm
I made several equations in order to find its area and volume. If you could answer me, it would be very gratifying.

    Greetings!

    • Hello Ana,

Without seeing the appearance of the broken part it is difficult to help you since we do not know if it is a regular, irregular, square, rectangular break.... without knowing that we cannot solve your doubt.

      Greetings!
